PTE or the Pearson Test of English is another one of widely recognized English language proficiency exams. PTE Test Format
Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes)
- Candidates complete tasks such as personal introductions, reading aloud, sentence repetition, describing images, summarizing lectures, and essay writing. This section evaluates clarity, fluency, grammar, and coherence in both spoken and written English.
Reading (29–30 minutes)
- Candidates answer multiple-choice questions, rearrange paragraphs, and fill in blanks. This section measures comprehension skills, the ability to identify key ideas, and vocabulary understanding.
Listening (30–43 minutes)
- Tasks include summarizing spoken content, completing sentences, selecting missing words, and detecting errors in transcripts. This section tests the ability to interpret spoken English in different contexts.
Band Score and Assessment Criteria
PTE test scores range from 10 to 90, with 90 being the best and 10 the worst. The evaluation criteria is based on skills like pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and written discourse.
- 85–90: Expert
- 76–84: Very Good
- 59–75: Good
- 43–58: Competent
Most institutions require an overall score of 58–79. However, there are specific section-wise criteria based on the universities and programs.
