The UK is one of the most popular study destinations for Nepali students, and it’s easy to see why. World-class universities, one-year master’s programmes, increasing queries about UK student visa from Nepal, and a post-study work visa that lets you stay and work for two years after graduation make it a genuinely compelling choice.
But before any of that, you need a UK Student Route Visa. Getting it right matters; a missing document or an incorrect bank balance can result in refusal and months of delay. This guide walks you through exactly what’s required, what it costs, and how the process works step by step.
What You Need Before You Can Apply
The UK Student Route Visa isn’t something you can apply for speculatively. You need three things in place first: an unconditional offer from a UKVI-licensed UK university, a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) reference number issued by that institution, and proof that you meet the English language requirement, typically through IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Once you have your CAS, you have a six-month window to lodge your visa application. Don’t sit on it.
It’s also worth knowing that your CAS contains key details UKVI will check: your course name, start date, tuition fee, and your university’s sponsor licence number. Any inconsistency between your CAS and the documents you submit is a red flag for visa officers. Before you apply, go through your CAS carefully and make sure everything aligns with your transcripts, offer letter, and financial documents.
Nepcoms works directly with UKVI-licensed universities across the UK. You can explore university options and intake dates on our Study in the UK page.
The Financial Requirement: Why It Catches Most Applicants Out
This is where most Nepali students run into trouble. The UK Home Office requires you to show that you can cover your first year of tuition plus living costs, and those funds must be sitting in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
The official 2026 living cost thresholds are £1,529/month in London and £1,171/month outside London, calculated over up to nine months. Add your tuition on top of that, and you’re looking at a significant sum.
One practical point worth knowing: universities outside London, places like the University of Sunderland, Teesside, or Bolton, reduce your required balance by NPR 10–15 lakhs compared to London institutions, while still offering fully UK-recognised degrees. It’s a detail many students overlook until it’s too late.
If your parents or a guardian are funding your education, their bank statements can be used. But they must be accompanied by a signed sponsor declaration and, in some cases, proof of their source of income. A savings account that suddenly shows a large deposit shortly before the 28-day window opens is something UKVI looks at closely. Consistency and transparency in your financial history matter.
Documents You’ll Need
Every item on this list has to be in order before you submit. Here’s what to prepare:
- Valid passport: at least six months’ validity beyond your course end date
- CAS letter: issued by your UK university after you accept your offer
- Bank statements: showing the required balance held for 28 consecutive days
- English test scores: IELTS Academic or PTE Academic meeting UKVI minimums
- TB test certificate: from a UKVI-approved clinic in Kathmandu (mandatory for Nepali applicants)
- NOC (No Objection Certificate): from Nepal’s Ministry of Education
- Academic transcripts and certificates: NEB/HSEB for undergraduate, Bachelor’s degree for postgraduate
- IHS payment receipt: proof that the Immigration Health Surcharge has been paid
If your parents are sponsoring your studies, add their bank statements, proof of income, and a signed sponsor declaration to the above.
A note on the TB test: it’s the document that catches students off guard most often. Nepal is on the UK’s mandatory TB testing list; there’s no way around it. The test must be done at a UKVI-approved clinic in Kathmandu, results take three to five working days, and appointment slots fill up quickly during peak intake seasons (typically April–June and September–October). Book it early.
Our counsellors at Nepcoms do a full document review before every UK application is submitted; it’s one of the main reasons our visa success rate stays consistently high. Find out how we work at nepcoms.com/apply-online.
What Does the UK Student Visa from Nepal Actually Cost?
The visa application fee is £524 (roughly NPR 95,000–1,00,000 at current rates). On top of that, the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year of your course. This is what gives you access to NHS services while you’re in the UK, and it adds up quickly for longer programmes.
If you need a faster decision, a Priority Visa costs an additional £500, or a Super Priority (next working day) costs £1,000 extra. For most applicants applying well in advance of their intake, standard processing, which takes three to six weeks, is perfectly sufficient.
The Process, Simply Put
After receiving your CAS, you complete your online application at gov.uk, upload your documents, and pay the visa fee and IHS. You then book a biometric appointment at VFS Global in Kathmandu to submit your fingerprints and photograph. That’s broadly it, the rest is waiting.
Standard processing takes three to six weeks. You can track your application through the VFS Global portal. Once approved, you can travel to the UK no earlier than one month before your course start date.
One thing students often underestimate is how long the end-to-end process takes when you factor in gathering documents, the TB test, the 28-day bank balance window, and waiting for the visa decision itself. For a September intake, most experienced consultancies recommend starting the process no later than May or June. For January intakes, October is a sensible starting point. Leaving it to the last few weeks creates unnecessary pressure and increases the risk of errors.
Our study abroad programmes page covers how Nepcoms supports students from the first counselling session through to pre-departure.
The Most Common Reasons for Refusal
UK visa refusals for Nepali students almost always come down to the same handful of issues: the 28-day bank balance rule not being met correctly, a weak or unconvincing Statement of Purpose, English scores below the UKVI minimum, or a missing TB certificate or NOC.
A strong SOP matters more than many students expect. It’s your opportunity to show UKVI that your study plans are genuine, well thought-out, and make sense given your academic background. Generic, template-driven SOPs are easy to spot and often contribute to refusals.
Your SOP should clearly explain why you chose the UK, why this specific course and university, how it connects to your previous studies or work experience, and what you plan to do after graduating. It doesn’t need to be formal or overly academic; it just needs to be honest, specific, and coherent. A counsellor who knows what UKVI is looking for can make a significant difference here.
Nepcoms has an in-house SOP writing team and a financial documentation specialist who work on every UK application we handle. See why that approach has earned recognition in our awards and achievements.
One More Thing: The Graduate Route Visa
After you graduate, the UK’s Graduate Route visa allows you to remain in the UK for two years (three years for PhD graduates) to work or look for work, with no job offer required upfront. For Nepali students in fields like technology, finance, and healthcare, this has become a serious career pathway in its own right.
What makes the Graduate Route particularly valuable is its flexibility. You’re not tied to a specific employer or sector — you can explore different roles, build your CV, and even switch industries while you’re on it. Many Nepali graduates use those two years to gain the experience required to qualify for the UK Skilled Worker visa, which can eventually lead to settlement.
It’s worth factoring this into your decision from the start, not just as an afterthought once you’ve arrived.
