IELTS

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is a standard English language test accepted in the most number of countries. It is a benchmark among the test exams and acts as a getaway for study abroad. If your aim is to study and migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, IELTS is mandatory. IELTS Test Format

Listening  (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)

  • Candidates answer 40 questions based on four recorded conversations and monologues.

Reading (60 minutes)

  • Candidates must read passages from various sources and answer 40 understanding-based questions.

Writing (60 minutes)

  • Candidates should complete two tasks during the writing section. The first is 150 words report writing using visual representation and the second being writing an essay in 250 words.

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

A face-to-face interview divided in 3 sections and including:

  • Personal Introduction
  • Two-minute topic presentation
  • Discussion on abstract ideas

Band Score and Assessment Criteria

IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system to measure your proficiency in English, with 1 being the bottom and 9 being the top. 

  • Band 9: Expert Use
  • Band 8: Very Good User 
  • Band 7: Good User
  • Band 6: Competent User
  • Band 5: Modest User
  • Band 4: Limited
  • Band 3: Extremely limited
  • Band 2: Intermittent
  • Band 1: Non-user
  • Band 0: Did not take the test

Most universities require an overall band score of 6 and above with specific requirements for individual modules based on the course. Understanding the scoring system helps set realistic goals and prioritize areas for improvement.
