Study in Germany from Nepal
Public universities that charge no tuition, 140 working days a year, and 18 months to find a job after you graduate. Here is what it costs, and what the German Embassy in Kathmandu actually asks for.
Eligibility checklist
Academic
- NEB Grade 12 alone is not direct entry. You need a one year Studienkolleg foundation, or one completed year of a Nepali bachelor’s
- Master’s: a four year bachelor’s in a matching field, usually 60 to 70% or GPA 2.5 to 3.0
- Three year bachelor’s degrees are assessed case by case
- Check your institution on anabin before you apply, not after
Do you need APS?
- Entirely Nepali education: no. There is no APS office for Nepal
- +2 or bachelor’s completed in India: yes, through APS India, about INR 18,000 and 3 to 4 weeks
- German or European public scholarship holders are exempt
- Some universities ask for APS as an admission condition regardless. Check your offer letter
Finances
- Blocked account of €11,904, released at €992 a month after arrival
- Or a scholarship confirmation, or a sponsor’s declaration from Germany
- Or documented financial status: employer letter, land ownership, tax records, bank statements
- Health insurance covering at least €30,000
The rule that costs Nepali students an entire intake
The German Embassy in Kathmandu recognises German language certificates from only three sources: the Goethe Center Kathmandu, VHS in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu or Pokhara, or telc. A certificate from any other institute will not be accepted.
And it must be submitted with your application. It cannot be handed in afterwards. Book your test date before you book anything else.

Why study in Germany?
Around 402,000 international students were enrolled at German universities in the 2024/25 winter semester, most of them paying no tuition at all. As Australia, the UK and Canada have each tightened their student routes, Germany has kept expanding. Its problem is a shortage of skilled workers, not a surplus of students.
Tuition at public universities
State policy, not a scholarship. You pay only a semester contribution.
Work rights per year
Or 280 half days, at a minimum wage of €13.90 an hour.
To find work after you graduate
Then an EU Blue Card, and a fast route to permanent residence.
Two exceptions to the free tuition rule: the state of Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, and private universities charge €10,000 to 20,000 a year. Everywhere else, the tuition line in your budget is genuinely zero.
Top courses in Germany
Where Nepali students cluster, chosen for graduate demand rather than ranking alone. Note that the Fachhochschulen, the universities of applied sciences, are often the better fit than a research university: they are practice led, tied to industry, and easier to convert into a Werkstudent role and then a job offer.
Engineering
Mechanical, automotive, electrical and civil. Germany’s deepest strength.
Computer science and IT
A recognised shortage occupation, with a lower Blue Card salary threshold.
Business and logistics
International business, supply chain and finance. Widest English taught choice.
Natural sciences
Physics, chemistry, environmental and renewable energy research.
Nursing and healthcare
Acute shortage, but mostly German taught with high language bars.
Data and AI
Fast growing master’s field, taught in English at most institutions.

Winter carries the widest course choice. The most common reason a Nepali student misses a German intake is not refusal, it is running out of calendar: language takes 9 to 12 months, the embassy appointment queue takes weeks, and processing takes 3 to 4 weeks minimum. Start the language plan immediately
A1 to B2 takes 9 to 12 months, and only Goethe, VHS or telc certificates are accepted. This is the step that sinks timelines.

Transfer €11,904, or assemble your sponsorship or financial status file. Allow one to two weeks for the confirmation document.

Lodge online and book your appointment
Through the Consular Services Portal with the VIDEX form. Embassy slots book out weeks ahead, so register early.

Attend the embassy in person
Originals, fingerprints, photograph, and €75 in NPR cash. One complete set plus one copy, unstapled, because the file is scanned on submission.

Processing, then pre departure
Three to four weeks minimum, longer in the May to August peak. Then accommodation, insurance, city registration and banking.

Academic and identity
- Passport valid at least 12 months, plus a copy of the data page and last page
- One recent biometric photograph, under six months old
- Citizenship certificate, original and one copy
- Birth certificate
- School leaving certificate, higher secondary certificate and all mark sheets
Supporting
- VIDEX application form and the signed declaration on true and complete information
- Admission letter from your German university
- A self written motivation letter, in your own words
- Language certificate, submitted with the application
- Proof of financial means, and health insurance and flight booking after approval
All documents must be in German or English, or accompanied by a certified translation. The embassy notes that it reserves the right to forward fake documents to the police, and to request an additional interview. Ask us to check your file before you attend.
How much money is required to study in Germany?
Budget €13,500 to 16,000 for your first year at a public university, roughly NPR 21 to 25 lakh. The largest number on this page, the €11,904 blocked account, is your own money — it is released back to you at €992 a month once you land, and you live on it.

Add NPR 2,000 for your NOC, plus language and IELTS test fees, uni-assist charges, translations and bank transfer charges. Add €1,500 per semester if your university is in Baden-Württemberg, €10,000 to 20,000 a year if it is private, and about INR 18,000 for APS if your degree is Indian. Applicants holding a DAAD or other German public scholarship pay no visa fee at all.
The blocked account is not legally mandatory
Almost every page you will read calls the blocked account the mandatory financial requirement. The German Embassy in Kathmandu says something more precise, and it matters if your family is trying to assemble NPR 18 lakh in a hurry.
- The embassy lists the Sperrkonto as one acceptable proof of financial means, and states it is not mandatory for applying, though it may be requested during processing
- A scholarship confirmation is accepted
- A formal sponsorship declaration, a Verpflichtungserklärung, from a sponsor living in Germany is accepted
- Documented financial status is accepted: employer letter with income and length of service, company registration, land ownership certificate, tax evidence, personal bank statements
