Study in USA from Nepal
The deepest university system in the world, up to three years of work experience after graduation, and the hardest student visa in the world to get from Kathmandu. Here is what it costs to study in USA from Nepal in 2026, what changes on 15 September, and how our counsellors build a file that survives the interview.
How much money is required to study in USA?
For one year, a single student from Nepal should budget USD 30,000 to USD 75,000. That is roughly USD 10,000 to 60,000 in tuition depending on whether you choose a community college, a public university or a private one, USD 12,000 to 20,000 in living costs, USD 1,500 to 3,000 for mandatory health insurance, and about USD 785 in government fees.
There is no single government minimum. This is the first thing that surprises families who study in USA from Nepal after researching Australia or the UK: the United States sets no fixed figure. Your university does, on your Form I-20, and you must evidence that exact amount. In practice it lands between USD 40,000 and USD 90,000 for the first year.

15 September 2026 What changes for every F-1 student
On 17 July 2026 the Department of Homeland Security published a final rule ending “duration of status”, the system under which F-1 students have been admitted for the length of their programme since the 1970s. It is the most important change for anyone planning to study in USA from Nepal right now, and no other consultancy page in Nepal currently covers it.
- You are admitted for a fixed period: your programme end date on the Form I-20, or four years, whichever is shorter, plus 30 days to arrive and 30 days to depart.
- Your I-94 end date, not your I-20, now governs how long you may stay. Check it the day you land, and after every re-entry.
- To stay beyond it you file an extension of stay (Form I-539) with USCIS, with biometrics and a fee, or you leave and re-enter. Neither is automatic.
- The post-completion grace period drops from 60 days to 30.
- Students already in the US under duration of status keep it under transition provisions until they travel, extend, or hit the outside date.
The rule is classified as a major rule under the Congressional Review Act and is being litigated, so it may be delayed or amended. Implementation guidance from USCIS, ICE and the State Department is still coming. What is not in doubt is the direction of travel, and that a four-year cap is a real problem for a five-year PhD.
Why study in USA?
More Nepali students chose to study in USA from Nepal last year than in almost any year on record. The United States hosted 1,177,766 international students in 2024/25, more than any other country on earth, and 24,890 of them were Nepali. That made Nepal the sixth-largest source country in the world, and the fastest-growing of any major market, up almost 49% in a single year. By July 2026 the Department of Homeland Security counted 32,852 Nepali students holding active status.
Accredited institutions
From two-year community colleges to research universities. That depth is the real advantage, not the Ivy League. There is a programme that matches your marks and your budget, and you can change your major in the first two years without starting again.
Work after you graduate
Optional Practical Training gives 12 months in your field. A STEM degree adds a 24-month extension. During your degree: 20 hours a week on campus in term time, full-time in breaks, plus paid internships under CPT.
Tuition actually discounted
American universities discount heavily. Merit awards for strong international applicants are routine, some private universities meet full demonstrated need, and funded PhDs waive tuition and pay USD 20,000 to 35,000 a year. Never compare sticker price. Compare the offer.
Texas, New York, Illinois, Missouri and the Washington DC area all have large, established Nepali student communities, Nepali grocers, Dashain and Tihar programmes and campus associations. Five years ago there were fewer than 12,000 Nepali students in the country. There are now nearly 33,000.
What it costs to study in USA from Nepal in 2026
Below is a realistic first-year budget for a single student. The range is enormous because the choices are enormous. A community college in Ohio and a private university in Boston are not the same purchase. Let a counsellor cost your actual shortlist rather than working from an average.

International students pay the out-of-state rate at public universities. Any page quoting USD 10,000 to 25,000 for a public bachelor’s is quoting in-state figures you are not eligible for.

The USD 250 fee most guides still leave out
The visa integrity fee was introduced under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and has been collected at issuance since October 2025. Several Nepali consultancy pages still list only the DS-160 and SEVIS fees, understating your visa cost by about NPR 35,000. The law allows a refund if you comply with your visa terms and depart on time, but DHS has not published a refund process, so budget it as a cost, not a deposit.
Nepal-side costs. Add the NPR 2,000 No Objection Certificate fee, your TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo test fee, SAT or GRE where required, university application fees of USD 50 to 100 each, document translation and notarisation, and bank charges on the tuition remittance.
The part other consultancies leave out
This happened while Nepali enrolment was setting records, which is the paradox at the centre of this page: more Nepali students in the US than ever before, and worse odds at the counter than ever before. Refusals are overwhelmingly issued under Section 214(b), the presumption that every applicant intends to immigrate, which you have to rebut in a two-to-five minute conversation.
Three things that are true at the same time
- A weak file now fails almost automatically. Fresh deposits, a course that does not follow from your previous study, a sponsor whose income cannot explain the savings, and vague answers about what you will do afterwards are the pattern in the refusals we see.
- A genuinely strong file is still approved. Traceable funds, a coherent academic progression, a specific answer about your career in Nepal, and consistency between your DS-160, your I-20 and your social media still works.
- Some profiles should not apply to the USA at all this year. We will tell you if yours is one of them, before you spend USD 535 finding out.
You do not need a visa bond for an F-1
The Department of State’s bond programme became permanent on 3 August 2026, at USD 10,000 to 20,000, and Nepal is one of the 50 designated countries. It applies to B-1/B-2 visitor visas only. It does not apply to F, M, J or H visas. Several Nepali consultancy pages have blurred this and are frightening students for no reason.
The same goes for the immigrant-visa pause that covered Nepal from January 2026 and was struck down in court on 21 August 2026, and the diversity visa suspension. Neither has ever applied to student visas.
Eligibility checklist for Nepali applicants
These are the baselines you have to clear to study in USA from Nepal. Individual universities set higher bars, and the consulate assesses everything again from scratch.
Academic requirements
- Completed +2 / NEB Grade 12 or A-Levels for bachelor’s programmes
- Most universities want a 2.75 to 3.0 GPA equivalent or better
- A recognised bachelor’s degree for master’s, usually 3.0 GPA equivalent
- Transcripts, mark sheets, character certificate, and a credential evaluation where asked
- SAT and ACT are optional at most universities but help scholarship chances; GRE or GMAT required for some master’s programmes
English and standardised tests
- TOEFL iBT 72 to 90 or IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 covers most admission
- Duolingo 105 to 120 is very widely accepted, and the cheapest and fastest option from Kathmandu
- PTE Academic is accepted at a growing number of institutions
- There is no English requirement for the F-1 visa itself, but the interview is in English, and struggling in it is a refusal risk of its own
Financial documentation
- Evidence of the full first-year cost stated on your I-20, typically USD 40,000 to 90,000
- Bank statements, sponsor affidavit, and documentation of where the money came from
- Salary, business income, property sale or a bank education loan are all acceptable sources
- Funds that appear suddenly and cannot be traced are the most common financial refusal trigger
- Loans from Nabil, NIC Asia, Himalayan, Standard Chartered and other A-class banks are accepted. Bring the sanction letter, not just a balance certificate
The interview, and Section 214(b)
This is where most people who try to study in USA from Nepal are actually refused. Unlike Australia or the UK, every applicant is interviewed in person at Maharajgunj, usually for two to five minutes.
- Say in one sentence why this course, at this university, in this country
- Explain how it is funded, and by whom, without reading from a paper
- Describe what you will do in Nepal afterwards, specifically enough to be believable
- Since June 2025, F, M and J applicants are instructed to set social media profiles to public and list every handle used in the past five years on the DS-160. Omitting an account is treated as misrepresentation. Deleting your history the week before is worse than leaving it, so audit early

Choose your offer and receive your I-20
You accept one offer, submit your financial documentation to that university, and it issues your Form I-20. Everything after this point is built on it, so every detail must match your passport exactly.

No Objection Certificate (NOC)
Apply online at noc.moest.gov.np with your I-20, transcripts, citizenship and passport. The fee is NPR 2,000 and the Ministry of Education typically processes it in 3 to 7 working days. You cannot legally remit tuition without it.

SEVIS fee, DS-160 and appointment
Pay the USD 350 SEVIS I-901 fee at fmjfee.com, complete the DS-160 online including all social media handles from the past five years, pay the USD 185 MRV fee, and book your interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu. Book as early as the calendar allows. Fall slots go quickly.

Interview preparation and the interview

Choosing where to apply

Check that any institution you are considering is SEVP-certified and regionally accredited before you pay an application fee. Scholarships and funding for Nepali students
Money is more available here than in any other destination, and less often asked for. Everyone who plans to study in USA from Nepal should apply for aid, even where they can pay.
Fulbright Foreign Student Program
The flagship award, administered in Nepal by USEF-Nepal. Fully funded master’s study, all fields except medicine and nursing, roughly four Nepali grantees a year. The 2027 to 28 cycle closed on 31 May 2026; the next opens around February. It is a J-1 visa with a two-year home residency requirement, which is a feature if you intend to return, a problem if you do not.
University merit scholarships
The largest real source of money. Most US universities offer international awards from 10% to 100% of tuition, applied at admission or by separate application. Deadlines are usually earlier than admission deadlines.
Need-based aid
A small number of well-endowed private universities meet full demonstrated need for international students. Competitive, but life-changing where it lands.
Graduate assistantships
Teaching and research assistantships at master’s and doctoral level often cover tuition and pay a stipend. Most funded PhD programmes are effectively free.
